Simon Cowell finally discusses Zayn's departure.

Zayn Malik quit One Direction last month, after initially dropping out of the band's 'On the Road Again' tour in Asia. The 22 year-old cited stress as his reason for taking the break, but announced six days later that he would be leaving the band for good to live like a "normal 22 year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight."

In an appearance on 'The Late Late Show with James Corden', the band's manager Simon Cowell finally spoke publicly about Zayn's seemingly sudden departure from the band.

"I kind of knew this was coming, if I was being honest with you," said Cowell. "We had had a few conversations and I knew he wasn't happy... Once someone's made their mind up, they're going to go."

The rest of the band completed the tour without Malik and are committed to continuing on without him. Band member Liam Payne announced earlier this month that writing has already begun for One Direction's fifth studio album.

HGH testing to begin for NBA players

This week the league and Players Association announced that starting next fall, NBA players will be blood tested for human growth hormones.

Discussions on testing players in this way began back in 2011, but it has taken several years to establish how the tests would be conducted and set the program in motion. Players will undergo three such tests annually, two during the season and one in the off-season.

The tests will be randomly announced and should they test positive a 20-game ban suspension will be enforced. If they test positive a second time, they're looking at a 45-game suspension, and a third time - disqualification from the NBA.

Selma song 'Glory' wins Oscar.

This week's Oscars were quite the musical event. After an energetic opening number by host Neil Patrick Harris, featuring Anna Kendrick and Jack Black, the night went on to include performances by Jennifer Hudson, Lady Gaga and of course the nominees for Best Original Song.

However, it was John Legend and Common's performance of their nominated song from the movie 'Selma' that really stole the show. The song was performed with a large choir and against a dramatic backdrop of the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge. During the poignant performance, members of the audience were visibly moved and followed it with a rousing standing ovation.

Later in the evening, Legend and Common went on to win the award for Best Original Song. In their acceptance speech they spoke of the ongoing relevance of their song 'Glory' and the movie. "Selma is now because the struggle for justice is right now."

Busch in Daytona Speedway crash

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch hit an internal wall during last weekend's Xfinity Series race. The 29 year-old was fortunate enough to escape the high impact crash with just a lower leg compound fracture and a fractured foot.

Daytona Speedway came in for heavy criticism after the incident. The concrete wall that Busch crashed into was one of a few on the track that had no safety barrier whatsoever. A three tyre-deep wall was installed the night of the crash as a temporary measure until a permanent safety wall is constructed. At a press conference, Speedway management said they were going to address such safety structure issues immediately.

As of yet, team bosses at Joe Gibbs Racing have not disclosed when they expect Busch back on the racing track, but he will certainly miss the Daytona 500.

Moore and Adams to divorce

A representative for the singer and actress Mandy Moore issued a statement this week confirming the end of her marriage to musician Ryan Adams. The pair began dating in 2008 and were engaged within a year, marrying in March of 2009.

Adams is as well known for his songwriting as for his membership of popular alternative country music acts Whiskeytown and The Cardinals. Since 2009, he has combined continuing to work with The Cardinals with solo material and tours.

It was Moore who filed for divorce citing 'irreconcilable differences'. Although the joint statement described the split as a 'respectful, amicable parting of ways'.

Will Kobe finish the season?

Whether Kobe Bryant will be able to finish the current season is in doubt after the LA Lakers star incurred an injury in last Wednesday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans. During the second half, Bryant tore the rotator cuff in his right shoulder. Rather than bow out of the game, he donned a sling and continued to play using only his left arm.

While thanking fans for their well wishes on Twitter, he quipped that the injury may have been due to his passing the ball too much. Bryant is known for his reluctance to pass and his tendency to go for the net himself.

The team doctor has yet to confirm whether the injury will rule him out for the rest of the season, but the outlook is not hopeful.

Jay Z wins 'oh' court battle

Rapper Jay Z has won a court battle with TufAmerica over his right to use the word 'oh' in his 2009 single 'Run This Town'. They argued that Jay Z was breaking copyright law in his use of the two letter word.

The music label claim it was taken from Eddie Bo's 1969 funk tune 'Hook and Sling', the rights of which they bought in 1996.

The court agreed with Jay Z's lawyers that "Even if one short word... could possibly be deemed original enough to warrant copyright protection, this fleeting and generic phrase is neither quantitatively and qualitatively significant."

TufAmerica have made similar claims against the likes of Kanye West and the Beastie Boys. 'Run This Town' won the 2010 Grammy for 'best rap/sung collaboration'.

Phelps pleads guilty to DUI charge

Olympic athlete Michael Phelps pleaded guilty to a DUI charge in a Maryland court last week. The 29 year-old was pulled over last September for driving at 84 mph in a 45 mph zone and crossing the double yellow line in Baltimore's Fort McHenry tunnel.

However, Phelps avoided jail time and was instead handed down 18 months of probation, which will allow him to continue training for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

"I'm finding out a lot about myself and for this day, I'm happy to be moving forward," he said has he left the courthouse. "I'll continue to grow from this and continue on my path to recovery."

The 18-time gold medalist retired from the 2012 games in London, but came out of retirement a year later and announced his intention to return to swimming. His next major competition will be in March where he will swim in the last three events of the US Grand Prix.

Swift pulls music from Spotify

Earlier this week, pop songstress Taylor Swift pulled her back catalogue from the music streaming service Spotify. The move comes after much comment by the singer in recent times that music should not be free.

"Music is art, and art is important and rare. Important, rare things are valuable. Valuable things should be paid for," said Swift in an open letter in the Wall Street Journal back in July. " prediction is that individual artists and their labels will someday decide what an album's price point is. I hope they don't underestimate themselves or undervalue their art."

The 24 year-old singer released her latest album 1989 a couple of weeks ago, and the initial sales may have something to do with her swift move on Spotify. In the first week alone, 1.2 million copies of the album sold. That's the highest number of sales for any artist in one week in no less than 12 years. Business savvy Swift might be showing other artists of today just how it's done.

Winnik takes a hard hit on the ice

Maple Leaf centre Daniel Winnik gave fans a fright in last Thursday's game in Denver. He took a pretty direct hit from Jan Hejda, defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche, and was knocked out cold. Hush descended throughout the stadium as the crowd watched paramedics rush onto the ice and stretcher off a clearly unconscious Winnik.

In a tweet shortly after the incident though, fears were abated, as the Maple's PR team let everyone know that the 20 year-old was alert and moving.

Canadian native Winnik has already had quite a lengthy career, being drafted into professional ice hockey back in 2004. Since then, he has played with numerous National Hockey League teams but made the move to his home town team, the Toronto Maple Leafs in July of this year.

Rocky start to season for Broncos

Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker has been handed a four game suspension after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, just as the 2014 season gets off to a start. The 33 year-old strenuously denies having knowingly taken any such substance, and claims that policy procedures are flawed.

"I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way", said Welker in a statement. "Anyone who has ever played a down with me, lifted a weight with me, even eaten a meal with me, knows that I focus purely on what I put in my body and on the hard work I put in year round to perform at the highest levels."

It's rumored that Welker may have consumed a recreational drug, known as a 'molly', that had been cut with amphetamine; thus causing the positive test result. A claim that he has also since denied.

Spears confirms split on stage

Queen of Pop Britney Spears is back on the market and not too shy to talk about it. During a performance at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, she confirmed that her romance with David Lucado was well and truly over.

"Well, by now everyone knows my boyfriend cheated on me", she declared in an upbeat revelation to her fans. "I need a hot guy. Where are the hot guys here tonight?"

Spears and Lucado began dating in early 2013, after her long-term relationship with former agent Jason Trawick came to an end. The 32 year-old star is currently resident at the Planet Hollywood with her high-energy show 'Piece of Me'.

Not a good start for Woods in Kentucky

Tiger Woods has had a rough start in this year’s PGA Championship. After a less than satisfactory tee shot and three bogeys just before it, the frustrated golfer forgot his manners and was heard yelling an expletive phrase before flinging his club at the green.

Woods’ shaky performance comes just a few months after his return to play after back surgery, which kept him out of last April’s Masters Tournament for the first time in his professional career.

Whether his luck will change for the remainder of the Championship remains to be seen, but heading into the second round 3-over par is certainly not ideal.

The tournament began on Thursday and is taking place at the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lady Gaga hospitalised in Denver

Pop sensation Lady Gaga reached new heights at the Pepsi Centre last Wednesday. After a high-energy show in Denver, Colorado, the singer was forced to seek medical attention for altitude sickness.

Apparently altitude sickness is a relatively common affliction for newcomers to the city, which sits about a mile above sea level. A local tourism site recommends that visitors take it easy and give themselves time to acclimatise before engaging in too much physical activity: not an easy feat for an international performer like Lady Gaga.

However, 28 year-old Gaga made a quick recovery and subsequent tour dates have not been affected. The Denver show marked the midway point of Lady Gaga’s latest world tour ArtRave: The ARTPOP Ball, which is due to finish in Paris in November of this year.

Germany are the new World Champions

In a nail-biting World Cup final, Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time, winning a tournament that has been full of twists in the last couple of weeks. After their semifinal 7-1 anhilation of host nation Brazil, the Germans were on a course for glory but Argentina certainly put up a good fight.

The Estadio de Maracana in Rio De Janeiro was packed with soccer fans expecting a close game, and they were not disappointed. Both sides played well in defense keeping the match scoreless and calling for extra time. It was not until the second half of that extra time that the winning goal was scored in the 113th minute. Assisted by Andre Schurrle, Mario Gotze sealed the win for Germany.

"It's incredible. The team did it beautifully," said elated goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after the game. "At some point we'll stop celebrating but we'll still wake up with a smile."

This is the fourth World Cup title for Germany, the last being in 1990 when they defeated Argentina once again. This win marks the first time a European country has won a World Cup tournament in South America.

Last surviving Ramone dies at 65

Tommy Ramone, drummer in one of the most influential punk rock bands of all time, the Ramones, passed away last Friday, July 11th. While he was born in Hungary in 1952, Tommy and his family moved to New York when he was four years-old. From high school onwards, he began to display an interest in music, particularly in punk rock.

The foundations of the Ramones began with Tommy and lead guitarist Johnny, who first started playing music together as teens in a four-piece garage outfit called the Tangerine Puppets. He was originally the Ramones' manager but when in 1974 Joey Ramone moved from drums to lead vocals as he could no longer keep up with the band's increasingly fast tempos, Tommy stepped into the role. He played on drums for the next four years until Marky Ramone joined the band in 1978.

He also had a talent for producing music and, in addition to co-producing the band's own albums, he was an assistant engineer on Jimi Hendrix's 1970 album, Band of Gypsys. Following unsuccessful treatment for cancer, Tommy Ramone, passed away at his home in Queens, New York at the age of 65.

YouTube quarrel with Indie record labels

It may not be long before YouTubing some of your favourite chart-topping artists, such as Adele or the Artic Monkeys, becomes a thing of the past. In a spat over licences currently under negotiation, YouTube has threatened to block some of the industry's smaller independent labels if they do not agree to the new terms.

The changes come as part of the site's introduction of a music subscription service, to which larger music corporations Sony, Universal and Warner have all agreed. YouTube, owned by Google is trying to introduce 'new revenue streams' in an industry where sales are steeply declining.

The labels involved are holding out for higher fees from YouTube for their content, while the streaming giant is holding fast, bolstered by the fact that exclusion will be much more detrimental for the labels and artists financially. Watch this space...

Spain's shock defeat to the Netherlands

Brazil 2014 kicked off last week and already the front runners are finding this year's FIFA World Cup tournament to be full of surprises. In their opening game against the Netherlands, Group B's Spain lost to the Dutch 5-1.

David Silva had a great chance just before half-time, when Spain were 1-0 up, but just missed. Commentators suggested had Silva scored at that point, Spain's game could have gone very differently.

Casillas took a hammering in goals and it is expected that he will not be on the field when Spain attempts a comeback in their second outing against Chile on tournament day 7.

Kim and Kanye wed in Florence

Rapper Kanye West and Kim Kardashian married in a lavish Italian ceremony last weekend. The wedding took place at the historic 16th-century Beldevere fort, situated in the heart of Florence.

Much speculation abounds as to the details of the ceremony and opulent reception, with some of the more unusual ones being the presence of a golden tower toilet block; Jaden Smith causing havoc in a white batman suit and 36 year-old West's 45-minute ode to himself.

Reality TV star Kim walked down the aisle to a live performance from Andrea Bocelli, and both Lana Del Rey and John Legend sang at the reception.

The newlyweds have since gone on to honeymoon in Ireland with a luxurious stay at Castle Oliver in south County Limerick, and are believed to be then travelling to Prague for the nuptials of Kanye's stylists.

Williams out of French Open

In her earliest exit from a tournament in two years, Serena Williams' is out of the French Open after losing to Spain's Garbine Muguruza in the second round. With a final score of 6-2, 6-2 to Muguruza, fans were shocked to see the defending champion defeated at such an early stage.

32 year-old Williams started playing tennis at the tender age of four and is currently ranked at no.1 in the world, but who knows how this latest performance will affect her future ranking.

It may save some family tension though. Venus Williams was also eliminated in the second round and would have faced sister Serena in the third round had they both advanced.

Radio host calls out Mets player for skipping games

A WFAN radio host has divided opinion after making some coarse comments on players taking paternity leave last week.

Mike Francesca was commenting on Daniel Murphy missing the first two games of the season for the Mets to spend time with his wife and new born child.

"Go see the baby be born and come back," said Francesca. "You’re a Major League Baseball player. You can hire a nurse to take care of the baby if your wife needs help."

The comments angered some, while others agreed that for Murphy to skip two games was unnecessary and unprofessional, among them NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason.

"I would have said C-section before the season starts. I need to be at Opening Day, I’m sorry."

MLB players are entitled to go on a three-day paternity leave list if a family emergency happens during game time.

Despite political protests and well-reported logistical shortcomings, the spirit of the Games and the quality of sport on display spoke for themselves.

Ex Dolphins player addresses bullying scandal

Former Miami Dolphins player Jonathan Martin has revealed all in an interview with 'NBC Nightly News' on why he felt he had to leave the team last October. In his interview, the NFL tackler said vulgar comments and daily harassment simply became too much to bear.

"I've been in locker rooms. There's vulgar language used in locker rooms.", explained 24 year-old Martin. "One Instance doesn't bother me. It's the persistence of it. I wish I would have had more tools to deal with my situation. I felt trapped."

An investigation into bullying in the league began in November and New York attorney Ted Wells is set to release his report on that investigation after the upcoming Super Bowl.

Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has said he is proud of how the team and organisation have dealt with the scandal, and that when the report is released they'll do "what has to be done" to ensure the claimed 'toughening up' practices are never exercised or tolerated again.

Bryant back on court after eight months

Kobe Bryant is back on court for the LA Lakers after an eight-month recovery stint for a torn Achilles tendon. Despite the serious nature of the injury, Kobe was eager to get back to work for the Lakers last Sunday night.

"I think the last time I had eight months off, I was still in the womb. It felt good to get out there."

With a warm welcome back from fans, Bryant scored a not-too-shabby nine points and had eight rebounds in his return to the game. However, it wasn't enough to help the Lakers overcome the Toronto Raptors, who went on to win the game 106-94.

Bryant acknowledged that he is not back to full form and that a full recovery will take time. "My rhythm is completely out of sync. But this is a start, and I guess a start is good."

Gomez storms off Jingle Ball stage

Singer and actress Selena Gomez shocked fans at last weekend's Jingle Ball concert in LA. After experiencing some technical difficulties on stage at the Staples Center, 21 year-old Gomez was heard to say 'What the *&%*' before dropping her microphone and storming off the stage mid-set.

It's thought audio and microphone difficulties marred her performance from the start, forcing the songstress to try and make up for the visible upset by chatting to the audience between songs.

"Sorry the sound isn't working! Are you guys having a good night? Is it ok if I perform two more songs and you guys can get to it?... I have to say that before you guys go on to the people that you care about, I really appreciate you supporting everything I do."

However, before moving onto the final two songs the singer appeared to lose patience and left the stage without warning. Some fans speculated that Gomez looked as though she was lip-syncing and that this may have made performing with sound difficulties even more cumbersome.

This year's KIIS-FM Jingle Ball at the Staple Center also featured Austin Mahone, Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus.

Armstrong claims UCI president colluded in doping cover-up

Disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong has claimed that a long-time UCI president helped him cover-up a potential doping scandal in 1999. He says then president, Hein Verbruggen, was present when he tested positive for a banned corticosteroid during the Tour de France.

"We've got to come up with something," Verbruggen is believed to have said and described the test results as "the knockout punch for our sport".

At the time, the UCI accepted a backdated prescription for saddle-sore cream as the explanation for the results and Armstrong went on to win the race, his first of seven Tour de France titles.

Verbruggen served as International Cycling Union president until 2005 and has continuously denied ever assisting Armstrong in covering-up his doping in professional cycling.

Red Sox manager denies cheating rumours

Rumours abounded this week that Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester may have cheated after a close-up photo of his glove with a green-coloured substance on it appeared on Twitter. The photo caused such a stir, even Major League Baseball felt compelled to issue a statement. Manager John Farrell explained it all to TV reporters before Game 2.

"If you know Jon Lester, he sweats like a pig and he needs rosin," said Farrell. "And you know what, he keeps it in his glove. Other guys will keep it on their arm. Other guys will keep it on their pant leg. So that's my response to the allegations."

In the World Series opener, Lester pitched 7.2 scoreless innings and struck out 8 helping his team sail to a 8-1 win over the Cardinals.

The Who soon to call it a day

This week much-loved rock band The Who announced that they will no longer perform together live after their next tour. The band have been around for almost half a century and intend to mark their 50 years in the music business with a round-the-world tour, focusing on some of the lesser known spots where fans may not have heard them play before.

"It'll be the last big one for us," said legendary guitarist Pete Townsend. "There are still plenty of places we've not played. It would be good to go to eastern Europe and places that haven't heard us play all the old hits."

The band released their first studio album 'My Generation' back in 1965 and have been steadily making albums and touring ever since. Last year, they delighted audiences at the Hurricane Sandy 12-12-12 benefit concert with an energetic rendition of their '70's classic 'Baba O'Riley'. It is reported that original band members Townsend and Roger Daltrey will go on to work on solo projects after the tour.

Michael Jordan set for third comeback?

Former NBA All-Star Jalen Rose has claimed this week that Michael Jordan will step out of retirement for a third time. In a conversation with the editor-in-chief of Grantland Bill Simmons Rose said "I'll make a quick prediction for the Bobcats. Michael Jordan is coming out of retirement and playing one game this year."

Jordan first stepped out of retirement back in 1994 to wear the #45 shirt for the Bulls. In 1998, he got back in the game once more, but this time for the Washington Wizards, before retiring once again in 2003.

As to whether or not Rose's prediction will become a reality, we will have to wait and see. Although Jordan does happen to be the owner of the Bobcats team so it may not be all that unfathomable...

Elizabeth Olsen rumored for Avengers sequel

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, actor Samuel L. Jackson confirmed Olsen's involvement in the next installment of the Avengers movies: 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron.' However, the loose-lipped actor claimed to have no knowledge of the budding actress' role in the forthcoming sequel.

"I don't know what she's doing, if she's on the inside or the outside," said Jackson. "I haven't seen a script."

Speculation on the possibility of Olsen starring in the film began back in August when it was reported that she was lined up to play Scarlet Witch, one half of a brother-sister duo; the brother being Quiksilver, rumored to be played by actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Younger sister of TV child stars Mary Kate and Ashley, Elizabeth Olsen has roused considerable interest in Hollywood of late, particularly for her roles in some recent Indie offerings. It's believed she was considered for the role after Irish actress Saoirse Ronan turned it down.

Despite the rumors, all casting for the movie will not be officially confirmed until next March, when filming begins.

Tebow headed for Russia?

Reports this week say that quarterback Tim Tebow has been offered $1 million to take his skills to Russia. Having recently been released from The English Patriots, it is believed 26-year old Tebow has been asked to play two games for Moscow Black Storm, the first being their semi-final game against the Moscow Patriots.

"We offered him $1 million for two games," said Black Storm owner Mikhail Zaltsman. "I talked to him personally and he wanted to go."

However, some say that a move to a lesser league in Russia, even if only for two games, could damage the quarterback's career and image stateside. According to CBS Sports, he has also been offered a contract to play the Arena Football League's LA KISS beginning March 2014, so fans will just have to wait and see whether Tebow decides to stay stateside or head for Russia.

Katy Perry's Roar upsets PETA

Singer Katy Perry is the latest celebrity to anger the animal rights organisation PETA. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals claims that Perry's inclusion of numerous animals in the video for her latest single Roar are subjected to cruelty when used in such a way. In the video Perry is seen mingling with a variety of jungle wildlife, including elephants, monkeys and tarantulas.

"Animals used for entertainment endure horrific cruelty and suffer from extreme confinement violent training methods", they said. "They often become stressed and anxious when hauled around and forced into unfamiliar and frightening situations."

Apparently, the company used to provide the animals for the video, The Serengeti Ranch, has been investigated by the US Department of Agriculture no less than 22 times since 2001. Road is the first single from Perry's new album Prism set for release on October 22.

Miley reacts to VMA critics

Miley Cyrus has spoken out against her critics after her controversial performance at last week's MTV Video Music Awards. She joined Robin Thicke on stage for a duet of his hit single Blurred Lines, but the focus was firmly on Cyrus and her often risque dance routine.

"What's amazing is I think now, we're three days later and people are still talking about it," Cyrus said. "They're over thinking it. You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it."

The 20-year old has been displaying her 'twerking' moves of late and some critics accused the singer of using African-American culture to propagate her new 'hip' image. But Cyrus seems to have seen it as an opportunity for publicity more than anything else. Her new album BANGERZ will be released on October 8.

Shock exit for Federer from US Open

During his first fourth-round match of the tournament, Federer lost to 19th seed Tommy Robredo 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4. With no less than 17 major titles, there were high hopes for Roger Federer, but his performance caps a disappointing form of late and a dismal attempt at the Grand Slam.

"I kind of self-destructed, which is very disappointing," said Federer, who made 43 unforced errors and managed to convert only 2 of 16 break points. "It was a frustrating performance."

The defeat marks the first season since 2002 that Federer has not reached at least one final of any of his Grand Slam tournaments. Nor has Federer ranked lower than no. 7 since 2002.

Horan/Goulding romance revealed

The cat is out of the bag, as it were, for One Direction singer Niall Horan and rumoured girlfriend Ellie Goulding. The pair accidentally went public at the V Festival in Essex, England last weekend, sharing a kiss during a Kings Of Leon set. Despite trying to stay incognito in hoodies and shades, they were spotted by other festival goers and made their way to the backstage VIP area shortly before the band finished.

The blossoming romance comes soon after 26-year old singer/songwriter Goulding’s relationship with actor Jeremy Irvine ended last month. While Horan may be seven years her junior, it’s believed the pair have been friends for some time, with the 19-year old pop sensation declaring in a recent interview that Goulding was ‘absolutely amazing looking’.

Having just finished touring in the US, Niall Horan will join his other One Direction band mates for the premier of their documentary movie ‘This Is Us’ in London this week.

Is it time Little Leaguers ‘got paid’?

Calls have been made this week for Little League Baseball players to be financially compensated for playing in the league. The topic has arisen as players and supporters prepare for the upcoming season that will be shown on ESPN, which pays $4 million to Little League Baseball Inc. to show the games each year.

Considering that the non-profit Little League organisation turned over a profit of around $2.8 million last year, many feel it’s time the talented kids that bring in the viewing figures see some of the tangible benefits, particularly in the form of a scholarship or education fund contribution.

While those in favour of the move agree that sums should be kept modest, they argue that child actors and Disney stars are paid for the hours of entertainment they provide - so why not the Little Leaguers?

‘Hairy’ moment for Beyoncé in Montreal

Pop superstar Beyonce suffered an unfortunate mishap while performing in Montreal earlier this week. While singing hit song Halo, her hair got stuck in one of the many fans that line the stage during her shows.

Not one to let the crowd down, the 31-year old pro continued to sing as one of her trusted bodyguards Julius did his best to detangle her weave from the fan. Once her hair was freed she finished her set to a delighted audience.

Beyoncé later made light of it all by reposting a fan video of the incident to her Instagram, along with some ‘new’ Halo lyrics; "I felt my hair was yankiiiiiiin, from the fan that's always hatiiiiiin."

Her Mrs. Carter World Tour, continues in the US this summer before moving onto Latin America and Australia in the fall. Beyoncé will then bring the tour back to the States before wrapping it up in Boston on December 20.

Brewer’s Braun out for rest of the season

Milwaukee Brewer’s player Ryan Braun has been suspended until the end of 2013 for violating the MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. With about 65 games left for the Brewer’s this season the suspension will cost Braun some $3 million of his $8.5 million salary.

The five-time All-Star came under scrutiny some weeks ago when he and several other Major League players were linked to the Miami-based anti-aging clinic Biogenesis. It’s believed players obtained performance enhancing drugs from the clinic, including human growth hormone and anabolic steroids.

Others to come under the spotlight in the scandal include Melky Cabrera, Bartolo Colon and the Yankee’s A-Rod. Sources speculate that the MLB is currently looking at taking action against another 20 or so players believed to have availed of ‘treatment’ at Bosch and Biogenesis.

‘I wish to apologize to anyone I may have disappointed - all of the baseball fans especially those in Milwaukee, the great Brewers organization, and my teammates,’ said 29-year old Braun in a statement on the Brewer’s official website. ‘I am glad to have this matter behind me once and for all, and I cannot wait to get back to the game I love.’

Neil Patrick Harris to host this year’s Tony Awards

Neil Patrick Harris has been announced as the presenter of the 67th Annual Tony Awards. The popular actor and star of How I Met Your Mother is no stranger to Broadway himself and has taken to the stage numerous times for roles in Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, Rent, Company, Assassins, and more recently The Expert at the Card Table.

This will be 39-year old Harris’ fourth time presenting the awards, which will take place at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on June 9.

Harris has quite the reputation to live up to when it comes to presenting this year’s awards ceremony. Last year’s opening number included send-ups of popular Broadway favourites; The Book of Mormon, Mary Poppins and Annie, and his delivery of a presenter introduction while hanging upside down from a wire a la Spiderman.

Each year, the Tony Awards recognises and celebrates the talent Broadway has produced in the past year. Recognising those who have excelled in their field, be it acting, production, lighting, sound, costume or choreography.

Snyder insists no name change for the Washington Redskins

Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins, has reiterated his stance on whether or not that the team will be chainging their name anytime soon, and it won’t be under his watch.

Some feel that the use of the term ‘Redskins’ is offensive to the Native American Community but Snyder interprets it differently, insisting that it stands for tradition and winning.

“We’ll never change the name,” said Snyder. “It’s that simple. NEVER – you can use caps.”

The Washingtonian obtained a letter to Snyder last month from DC City Councillor David Grosso who termed the team’s name as “historically racist and derogatory”. However, according to an Associated Press poll carried out back in April, 79% of Americans are happy for the team to keep the name.

Media rumours brought Paltrow and Martin together?

In an interview with Contact Music, Gwyneth Paltrow has explained how she and husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, first met back in 2002.

After being stood up by another actress who he had a crush on at the time, Martin jokingly and supposedly arbitrarily dedicated a song to the 40-year old actress during a concert, despite the fact they had never actually met. The media picked up on it and decided to run with it.

“And because of that, because people were writing about it, we ended up meeting at a concert and there you go.” said Paltrow in the interview.

Paltrow later went to one of the band’s gigs in London and, amused at what the gossip mills were churning out about the pair, Martin invited her backstage to finally meet in person. And as they say the rest is history. The couple married in 2003 and have an eight-year old daughter, Apple, and seven-year old son called Moses together.

Aussie Adam Scott wins Masters 2013

Scott claimed victory in last weekend’s major golf tournament after a tense playoff with Argentina’s Angel Cabrera on Sunday evening. The playoff was called for when he and Cabrera tied at the finish with 9-under 279. Both went on to chip close for par on the 18th in the first playoff hole, with a 15-foot birdie putt from Cabrera grazing the right side of the cup on the 10th.

But Scott sealed the deal with his 12-foot birdie on the second playoff hole. With his long putter anchored against his chest, his final putt was visibly a clear one from the get go. Scott’s choice of putter was later commented on by Tiger Woods, who narrowly avoided disqualification from the tournament after an illegal drop and signing an incorrect card.

"Australia is a proud sporting nation, and this is one notch in the belt we never got," said Scott on being the first Australian to win this major. "It's amazing that it came down to me today”.

Wichita State fight their way into the ‘2013 Final Four’

March Madness finally comes to an end this weekend with the 2013 NCAA Tournament semi-finals and Championship games taking place at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.

Michigan and Syracuse, both seeded fourth, will battle it out having reached the semi-finals from the South and East brackets, while the other game between top-seed Louisville and dark horses Wichita State is sure to be the more anticipated of the two.

Seeded ninth, the Shockers are only the fifth team ever (seeded ninth or greater) to reach the Final Four since the tournament first began back in 1979.

In a tense regional final, Wichita lived up to their Shockers name and held onto their early lead over second seed Ohio State. While the Buckeyes did their best to claw back an advantage in the second half, Wichita clung on, heeding coach Gregg Marshall’s halftime advice to ‘play angry’. Wichita won the game 70-66.
“You’ve got to give them credit,” conceded Ohio States’ Craft. “They really came out firing and we really didn’t regain our footing until it was too late.”

Whether they can repeat that performance against Louisville on Saturday and make it to Monday night’s final remains to be seen…

John Mayer confirms Katy Perry split

In an April 2 appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, John Mayer confirmed his split with pop songstress Katy Perry. The couple had been an item since late 2012 but parted ways last month amid speculation that Perry’s friendship with ex-husband Russell Brand was getting too much for Mayer.

Mayer and Perry also briefly dated back in 2009, prior to Perry’s relationship with Brand, which began later that year. Perry went on to marry Brand in a lavish wedding ceremony in India in October 2010, but after 14 months of marriage, actor and comedian Brand filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Rumours at the time suggested the couple’s disagreement on when to start a family ended the marriage.

35-year old Mayer has dated numerous other showbiz personalities in recent years, including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, garnering himself somewhat of a reputation as a Hollywood lothario.

When pushed by Degeneres on why he and 28-year old Perry had chosen to part ways he gave nothing away; “It was a very private relationship going in,” he responded. “It was a private relationship during and it’s a private relationship, still.”

Is Taylor Swift dating Tom Odell?

The country star, Taylor Swift was seen leaving through the back door of a London restaurant in the company of Tom Odell last week sparking rumours that the two are an item. Speculation first began when the pair started flirting on Twitter in recent weeks. Having listened to a track of Odell's, Swift felt compelled to tweet the singer directly and let him know how talented she thought he was. The 22-year old British singer responded with 'xx'.

It would seem they have a lot in common as both songwriters are known for basing their music on personal heartbreak and love. They were first introduced backstage at this year’s Brit Awards, where Swift put on an energetic performance of her latest hit ‘Trouble’, while ex-boyfriend Harry Styles watched from the audience below.

Odell is also with the 23-year old songstress’ latest hit, having performed his own version of it on BBC recently. "Taylor Swift is a really intriguing character in music in that she's one of the biggest pop stars in the world and yet I think her songs are brilliant, I really do," said Odell in a recent interview. "I think she writes really dark lyrics ... I think she's a lot more real than people think she is." Watch this space…

LA Lakers owner Jerry Buss dies at 80

The franchise owner passed away last Monday, February 18, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a lengthy battle with cancer. A popular business man, scientist and socialite Buss is widely regarded as having changed the face of American basketball when he bought the Lakers back in 1979. Coining the term 'Showtime' for the game, he used his charisma and business acumen to transform the sport into an entertainment experience for all, expanding the fan base and the popularity of the game.

"Jerry Buss was more than just an owner. He was one of the great innovators that any sport has ever encountered," said NBA coach Pat Riley. "He was a true visionary, and it was obvious with the Lakers in the 80's that `Showtime' was more than just Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. It was really the vision of a man who saw something that connected with a community."

Basketball great Kobe Bryant made a special tribute to the late owner at last week's game where they beat the Boston Celtics, 113-99. After a brief memorial video, Bryant delivered a heartfelt speech about the man for whom he has worked almost half his life for.

"On Monday, we lost we all know to be the greatest owner in sports. Ever," said Byrant. "He was a brilliant incredible owner. He was even a better person with a great heart. His vision has transcended the game and we are all, all spoiled by his vision and by his drive to win year after year after year".

The LA Lakers will remain in the hands of the Buss family, primarily Jim and Jeanie Buss, who hope to continue their father's legacy of leading the NBA's most successful franchise.
